The golden age of alpine conquest relates to the period 1854 – 1865 when the vast majority of the major summits in the Alps were first climbed. Mountaineering, pioneered by the Victorians, develops as a « sport » with no scientific justification.
The guiding profession becomes more structured and with it develops a new alpine culture : a quest for adventure, exploration and tough physical challenge. The mountain chains are measured and mapped and a specific alpine literature emerges.
Mountaineering knows no borders and the pioneers of this relatively new sport cover tremendous distances across the Alps in quest of new challenges. To ensure every chance of success, mountaineers reserve the best mountain guides! Base camps of this large community are essentially Chamonix, Zermatt, Grindelwald and Valtournanche.
