The Alpine Club, first of its name, founded in 1857, has never ceased to encourage its members to explore new territories and to climb mountains all over the world. For over 150 years, alpinists, artists, photographers and writers have immortalized climbs and alpine landscapes, thus establishing one of the finest collections of art and literature retracing the history of mountaineering.
Established in 2000, the Compagnie du Mont-Blanc is the French leader in the sector of sk lift operators. Providing a privileged access to the mountains, the Aiguille du Midi lift celebrates its 60th anniversary this year. This remarkable site is at the heart of mountaineering history and also forges innovative technologies. Tth the new summit lifts and the vertiginous “step into the void” are unmissable attractions!
In the early 1860s, the Simond brothers seize an incredible opportunity. From simple blacksmiths they become leading manufacturers of mountaineering equipment. They develop the material necessary for the conquests of the Golden Age of mountaineering. 150 years later, Simond are renowned for the quality of their ice axes, crampons and carabiners, still designed and manufactured in the Chamonix Valley.
At the origins of Petzl, was the desire of its founders to devote their skills to a passion: exploration. Since the beginning, the vocation of this enterprise remains the same : to invent the tools that enable sportsmen and women to push the limits and to live their passions.
Millet becomes famous in the 1930s with the development of the first backpacks. From there, they went on to manufacture technical mountaineering equipment which enforced the brand image of this French firm. The notoriety of Millet is also associated with the prestige of leading alpinists of each generation.
Since 1995, the éditions Guérin have made their mark with the inimitable “red books”. Whether publishing great mounatineering classics, or totally novel texts the quality of documentation, illustrations and photography contribute to making their books collector items.
Founded int 1821, the Compagnie des guides de Chamonix contributes unconditionally to the Golden Age of Alpinism. Auguste Balmat, Michel Croz, François Devouassoud, Michel Payot, Jean-Estéril Charlet, to mention but a few of those pioneering guides who laid the foundations to alpinism as we know it today. Today the Company numbers over 260 members and continues to promote mountain adventure, discovery and physical prowess in the extraordinary playgrounds of the world.
The General Council of Haute-Savoie heads the Savoy regoin since it was annexed to France in 1860. The General Council supports municipalities in their projects and encourages action in favour of culture, art and history.
